Summary

In the year there was 17.2 billion households in the US were there was not enough food. This also represents 14.2% of the households. Within those households and others there was a total of 48.8 million Americans with less food than they should have. The saddest part to this is that children were effected. 3.9 million House hold had not the right amount of food and children. This could partly be blamed on the rise of food prices. Last year they rose 3.6%.

Reflection
When I think of hunger I think of third world countries. Certainly not America to me is seen as a place that has a problem of hunger. I did not know that so many people do not have the right amount of food. It is sad to think that people have to think about where their next meal is coming from. There is always food there for me and I am grateful for that
Questions
1 Could food be a limiting factor for the human race? Explain?
2 After reading this does it change your likelihood of giving to others that have less?
3 Is there a way to better provide food for every one?

  1. 1. I think that food prices could eventually be a limiting factor, if the prices sky rocket even more, but at the moment I do not think it is one, since many couples are still having babies.
    3. If there was a better way, I think the country would have started using a better method of getting food to everyone. Sure, there are charities and food banks and soup kitchens to help hungry families, but if that really helped the population as a whole, nobody would be worried about going hungry and those things would no longer exist.

More people need to be made aware of a terrible tragedy that is happening in America right now. This website details the work of an organization calling themselves Feeding America. Their mission is to help end hunger in America. As of 2010, the group is providing food to 37 million Americans. Struggling families need help desperately, and Feeding America is helping these people survive. Without Feeding America, people would be dying. The statistics are frightening. One in eight Americans depend on Feeding America for food and groceries. This accounts for 37 million Americans, including 14 million children. People need to decide between food and paying for rent, utilities, and other basic necessities. Feeding America is such a good cause. Feeding America has answered the prayers of many people and will continue to do so for many other Americans.

  4. The expert that I invited was Professor Gordon Conway. He is trained in agricultural ecology and he also directed the Sustainable Agriculture Program at the International Institute for Environment and Development. Mr.Conway is the author of The Doubly Green Revolution: Food for All in the Twenty-First Century and One Billion Hungry: Can We Feed the World? He is a good choice because he is very interested and involved in determining how to help people in need of food.
    Hi Mr.Conway,
My name is Dasha and I am taking environmental science at Hatboro-Horsham High School. My class has a blog on hunger in America. It would be great if you would be able to take some time to comment on it and give your opinion. The link to our blog is http://bndmdeluca.blogspot.com/2012/10/hunger-in-america.html
    Thank You!
    Sincerely,
    Dasha
